Almanac for Windows
Version 0.94
6/20/90
WHAT'S NEW!
* Definitely a stability update, the following fixes were made:
- Fixed Unrecoverable Application Error when the last item in
an overlay is 'Removed'.
- Fixed UAE error in the sort algorithm for scheduler appoint-
ments. A UAE error would occur whenever the sort attempted
to sort a table already in perfect sort order.
- Fixed apparent 'lock up' for some users at the shareware splash
window. Special accolades to Eric Brown and Michael Geary for
their help from the CIS MSWIN forum, as well as to Scott Baker
and Mark Huth for their special testing and encouragement!
- Fixed background color problems when running multiple copies
of Almanac. Also added a message box to make sure you want to
start another copy and warning message regarding updating desk
files if you do elect to run multiple copies.
Version 0.93
6/12/90
WHAT'S NEW!
* I have replaced INSTALL.EXE with ALMSETUP.EXE after hearing from
several users that the INSTALL program was not included with their
file set. Please insure that ALL files are included when recompressing
the files for distribution.
New features included in version .93 have required a change in format
of Almanac support files. The formats of overlay files (*.ALO) and
auto-load module files (*.ALM) have been changed since version .92.
Desk files (*.ALD) were changed between version .91 and .92. ALMSETUP
will convert any of these files to current formats for registered
users. Almanac comes with a complete set of default support files for
the new or un-registered user. If you do not convert prior Almanac
files, you will get a message box informing you that the file(s) failed
their header checks. You should not attempt to continue working with
Almanac until correcting this problem.
* Every effort has been made to insure that version .93 is compatible
with ALL modes of Windows 3.0. The program has been 'marked' as 3.0
compatible to avoid the WARNING startup message when not running Windows
in real mode. Also, the new proportional system font will be used
when running under Windows 3.0.
* A global configuration file, ALMANAC.MST, has been added to maintain
information for user preferences. You may now select the font faces
and sizes that are used to display to your monitor (this is independent
of print font preferences). An option is available for adding a sizing
frame to the brief dayview popup to alter it's size to your liking.
Another option allows you to save the new size and position along with
the size and position of the main month window. This information will
be used when the windows are initialized. You can select all of the
preceding features from the 'Preferences' menu.
Also, a new selection has been added to the 'File' menu, 'Save print
parameters'. This selection is activated following any type of printing.
It will save the font (and margin setting if appropriate) information
in the ALMANAC.MST file to avoid re-selecting your preferred parameters
for each print.
* Overlay information is now maintained internally by Almanac, removing
the awkward Notepad editting. I have attempted to construct a friendly
dialog for editing items, however I'm sure there is room for improve-
ment. Please let me know if you find any aspects particularly awkward
or if you have any other suggestions.
Almanac's overlay management also adds the ability to create recurring
items within a period of time such as every Tuesday, the third Friday
of every month, spans of days, and others. You may select a shading
option to add colors and/or hatch patterns. This shading currently only
affects the computer display and does not cause similar output when the
calendar is printed.
* Almanac has been updated to work appropriately when a user changes the
application background or window text color via the Windows Control
program. Multiple colors will only be used if you select a white
background, otherwise all drawing will be done using the color of the
window text.
Version 0.92
2/21/90
WHAT'S NEW!
* A utility, INSTALL.EXE has been provided for installation and
configuration under Windows. Almanac now keeps track of three
sub-directories (two of them variable) for support files. Refer
to INSTALL.DOC for more information.
* Overlay file extension has been changed from AOL to ALO to follow
the naming standards used by leading WinApps (e.g., keeping the
first two characters constant for application support files).
Almanac now uses ALO (overlay), ALD (desk data), and ALM (auto-load
module) extensions for support files. Rename any overlay files
you may have created to use the ALO extension.
* The format of desk data files has been changed while adding the
scheduler. The new format is more compact. A conversion utility
has been provided for any users who have notepad text that was
created under earlier versions. Your text has been saved into
*.ALD files (e.g., FEB90.ALD). The CONV092.EXE utility will auto-
matically rename all *.ALD files in the current sub-directory to *.OLD
and convert them to new *.ALD files.
* A new type of supporting file has been added to Almanac, the auto-load
module (*.ALM). Auto-load modules contain parameter settings for all
of the configurable options within Almanac, including a list of up to
ten overlay filenames to be loaded for display. The main 'File' menu
contains the selections Open, Save, and Save As... which are used to
manipulate auto-load modules. The save selections will replace or
create auto-load modules using the currently defined Almanac environ-
ment. ALM files can be used to quickly switch to a new environment,
including different sub-directory paths for overlay (*.ALO) and desk
data (*.ALD) files.
* The scheduler has been completed (uh, first draft that is...). Hope
it's a good start. You can add, modify, and remove events. This
initial setup does not include the ability to cut and paste events;
I hope to add conveniences like that soon.
* The print/font selection routines have underwent a major overhaul.
Isolated occurences were reported of problems with font sizes and
print margins in 0.91. The new code sticks very tight to available
font attributes when you select a font typeface. As you select
different faces and sizes, the font attributes selected may become
unavailable. If this is the case, a listbox will not have a selection
highlighted, or a checkbox will be gray, however the "desired" settings
will be remembered as you move through the faces (and sizes). If you
do change font parameters, make sure that a size is highlighted (unless
your printer does font scaling, such as PostScript), and that the
NORMAL, BOLD, and ITALIC boxes are checked appropriately for your
printer's fonts and capabilities. This will insure a good font match
during the print process.
* Several methods are now available for switching between brief dayview
mode and the desktop mode. A maximize/minimize arrow appears on each
window's title bar to allow quick toggling. A double-click in the
brief view's text window or anywhere in the desktop view's background
will also work. Keyboard toggling is performed from the system boxes
of each title bar (maximize/minimize). Additionally, hitting the space
bar in brief mode will advance to the desktop mode.
* Alarms entered for the alarm clock are now retained from session to
session, but are only valid for the day entered. Specifically, you
may only enter an alarm to be activated from today's present time up
until midnight. Use the scheduler to set alarms for a specific day
and time in the future.
* The time format used in the status bar and on the alarm clock is now
determined by the international settings selected using the Windows
CONTROL.EXE application. Twelve and twenty-four hour formats are
supported, as well as the period and colon for separator characters.
* The menu has changed AGAIN... <grin>!! I do believe it's all for the
best, though. The changes were made for organization and ease-of-use.
* ALMANAC will accept an input parameter specifying an initial auto-load
module other than ALMANAC.ALM (e.g., "ALMANAC.EXE MY-ALM").
This allows:
1) Starting Almanac from the "Run..." dialog of the MS-DOS
executive using a specific ALM (not such a big deal).
2) Double clicking on any *.ALM file (just like starting NOTEPAD
by clicking on a *.TXT file).
3) Specifying a run parameter when using a Window's application
manager such as "Command Post".
* All configuration information such as location, brief/dayview mode,
calendar type, etc... has been relocated out of the Windows's config
file, WIN.INI. This information is now maintained in the auto-load
module. The only information maintained in WIN.INI at present is the
master sub-directory (where ALMANAC's location file, font files, and
auto-load modules are kept), and registration info for registered
users (Thank you!!!).
